In it for the long run: More to Club Plus Super than just super performance

Club Plus Super’s Balanced fund has been rated as one of the best performing superannuation funds in Australia under the prestigious Canstar rating for 2017. Canstar compares personal super products for over 60 funds.

The strong result comes after Club Plus Super’s MySuper fund was also rated in the country’s top-five for 2017 by agencies SuperRatings and Chant West.

Club Plus Super CEO Stefan Strano said it was important not to place too much emphasis on a one-year number. From his point of view, the most important goal for superannuation funds was to deliver great outcomes for members over the long term and a strength of Club Plus Super is our ability to provide a very personalised level of support and advice when required.

“It’s fantastic to be able to give our members more money in investment returns in any given year than the other funds,” Mr Strano said. “But we’re a long-term investor, and one-year performance is not what we talk about every day.

“Everyone wants to receive high returns, but it’s just as important to know where the returns came from and how much risk was taken to achieve them – this information helps you understand whether it was good management or good luck.”

“We’re constantly evaluating the level of risk in our investment options and strategies to make sure they match the needs and expectations of all of our members.”

Club Plus Super’s MySuper investment option, where more than 85 per cent of fund members are invested, delivered a very healthy return of 12.9% as at 31 December 2017.
Over the past five years, the MySuper option delivered 9.6 per cent per annum and over ten years the fund has achieved 5.5 per cent per annum – which is a very solid result when you consider that the time period included the market losses from the Global Financial Crisis.
Head of Investments Gemma Dooley said Club Plus Super’s returns have been generated across a well-diversified range of asset classes, fund managers and investments.
“In conjunction with the fund’s Asset Consultant, Club Plus Super’s Investment Committee selects the best investment managers from around the globe,“ Ms Dooley said.
“Those managers are then given specific parameters to manage a portion of the assets and use their specific expertise to generate the best possible returns.
“In this way we are able to leverage the skills and resources of the biggest and most successful global investment managers while still delivering great value and diversification for our members.”
